Working Together
Martin Design Associates approached The FES Group to support their busy team on BREEAM projects. We now have a fantastic longstanding working relationship built on shared successes and trust. The Malmaison in York presented Martin Design Associates and The FES Group with an exciting but complex BREEAM refurbishment and fit out development. The ambitious plans are to transform a prominent, seven-story office building into a 150-bed hotel with meeting rooms, plus a rooftop extension with a new sky bar.

With experience of working client side, our team can manage BREEAM projects intuitively, anticipating challenges and identifying solutions quickly and effectively. On a large build site such as The Malmaison, processes inevitably make progress slow. Being based in the city undoubtedly made collaboration between the full Malmaison project team much easier.

The FES Group completed a full BREEAM pre-assessment and created a comprehensive pack for the planners. All documentation was securely and time-efficiently shared via Tracker Plus. Hours of discussion and regular site visits gave us the opportunity to identify and resolve potentially disruptive elements and we’ve very much enjoyed working hand in hand with the developer to agree realistic targets.

The Results
Inevitably with such a prominent project there is a lot of interest in progress at the site. As of the end of 2019 the development is almost at design stage submission, which is a huge achievement for all involved. The team has been working at a great pace and is well on track to achieve a very good BREEAM rating.
